Algorithmic Transparency
Interview with Doowan Lee, Senior Advisor at the Institute for Security and Technology & CEO/Cofounder of VAT (Veracity Authentication Systems Technology)
Doowan Lee is a national security advisor to the Institute for Security and Technology and an adjunct professor of politics at the University of San Francisco. His interest lies in using different algorithms to understand different themes – qualitative modelling, international security, civil society – and how these things intersect.
From looking at different data types, such as privacy and social media data, Doowan tries to see how extremists might undermine public discourses. For example, everyone’s social media looks completely different — one’s Facebook feed is completely individual, like fingerprints. So if an organisation has enough power, they could manipulate what’s on one’s feed.
Our interview with Doowan will look at how fake news and misinformation campaigns affect different societies and how we’re using AI to combat this. We’ve already seen how fake news campaigns have concerned the right wing’s power position in many democracies across the globe – how can we stop misinformation from taking over?
