Ian is a litigation and Compliance lawyer with over 30 year’s experience. He deals with a wide range of disputes and investigations, but with particular specialisations on issues involving data, intellectual property and technology. Ian leads Farrer & Co’s Data, IP and Tech Disputes team. He assists clients in responding to breaches of data protection laws and regulations and follow-on litigation and advises on compliance issues in this area. His work is often cross-border, particularly for clients based in the USA. Recognised as one of the leading litigators in the UK in the Lawyer Hot 100 in 2011 for his work in helping a client to recover a vast amount of information unlawfully taken from their computers – a case which went all the way to the Court of Appeal. Past President of the IP Commission of the Union Internationale des Avocats, an international organisation of lawyers, as well as a Member of ITech Law.
Recently in the UK, there have been many legal cases involving misuse of personal data. In November 2021, the UK's Supreme Court rejected a claim that sought billions of pounds in damages from Google over alleged illegal tracking of millions of iPhones. Footballers have also threatened legal action over unlawful use of personal information and performance statistics.
